If the Whatsapp Chat Timer is On, Will The Messages Disappeared On Both Sides?
Yes, when you turn on the disappearing messages timer on WhatsApp, the messages automatically disappear from both sides (for both you and the recipient in a one-on-one chat, or all participants in a group chat).
However, the timer only applies to messages sent after the feature is turned on; previous messages remain untouched.
You can set new messages to vanish after 24 hours, 7 days, or 90 days. If someone keeps the message before it expires, it stays visible.
How To Activate The Timer
To turn on disappearing messages for a specific individual chat, follow these steps:
1. Open the chat with the person you want to use the timer on.
2. Tap the contact's name at the very top of the screen to open their profile/chat info.
3. Scroll down and tap Disappearing messages.
4. Choose a duration under Message timer (24 hours, 7 days, or 90 days).
Once enabled, a notification will appear in the chat informing both of you that disappearing messages are turned on, and a clock icon will appear next to the contact's profile picture.
If someone forwards or quotes the message where the timer is already turned on, will it disappear too?
When someone replies to your disappearing message, a snippet (quote) of your original message stays attached to their reply. According to the WhatsApp Help Center, the quoted text might still remain visible in the chat after your original message's timer expires
And if a disappearing message is forwarded to a different chat, it becomes an independent copy in that new chat.
How to keep the message in an activated disappearing messages chat
You can keep a message in an active disappearing chat by long-pressing the message and tapping the bookmark/ribbon icon (Keep).
How to Keep a Message:
1. Long-press (tap and hold) the specific message you want to save.
2. Tap the bookmark/ribbon icon at the top menu bar (next to the delete and reply icons).
3. A small bookmark icon will appear next to the message timestamp, and both you and the sender will receive a notification that the message has been kept.
All saved messages can be accessed later by tapping the contact's name at the top of the chat and selecting Kept messages.
Things to remember
If you keep a message someone else sent, WhatsApp notifies the sender. The sender can choose to unkeep it; if they do, the message is deleted for everyone and cannot be saved again.
Can I keep the message only for myself but not the other side?
You cannot keep a disappearing message privately just for yourself within the chat application.
The WhatsApp Help Center states that once a message is officially "kept," it becomes visible to everyone in the conversation and will not disappear when its timer expires. Additionally, if you try to keep a message that the other person sent, they will immediately receive a notification.
If you want to save a message completely privately without the other person knowing, you have to use workarounds outside of the official "Keep" feature like taking a screenshot, copy and paste the messages into a private notes app or your personal "Message Yourself" chat on WhatsApp, or forward it to a separate personal chat or notes app before it expires.
Using a backup before it expires
You can recover disappearing messages from a backup only if the backup was created before the messages expired and you restore that backup before WhatsApp syncs or updates it.
If a backup (via iCloud or Google Drive) was made while the message was still active and visible in the chat, the message will be included inside that backup file.
To get them back, you must uninstall WhatsApp, reinstall it, and choose to Restore your chat history from that specific backup during setup.
Once restored, the message will temporarily reappear in your chat. However, if the disappearing timer has already run out on WhatsApp's active server/sync logic, or if a fresh automatic backup runs afterward, the message can vanish again or be permanently overwritten.
WhatsApp only stores one active cloud backup per phone number. If an automatic daily backup runs after the message has already disappeared, the new backup will overwrite the old one, making recovery impossible.
