How to Back Up and Restore Blackberry Contacts

• On the Home screen, click the Blackberry Messenger symbol or icon.
• On the contact list screen, press the Menu key and click Options.
• After that click Back Up and then Back up files locally (you can keep your backup file on your Blackberry smartphone or media card). 
• You can activate the Auto save contact list changes (by selecting the check box), so that a back up file will be saved automatically whenever your contact list changes.
• Click Back Up Now.

To restore the contact list back up file

• On the Home screen, click the Blackberry Messenger symbol or icon.
• On the contact list screen, press the Menu key and click Options.
• After that click Restore using a backup file from device.

However, BBM 7 comes with a major update. In BBM 7 (and going forward), we no longer have to worry because all the BBM contact list and settings info would be tied into your Blackberry ID. This means that it will grab your contacts and settings list and holds onto them. We no longer need to back up or restore the contacts manually either from the SD card or by email as all the information is stored in your BBID. If you notice, there is no backup/restore feature in the menu options of the BBM7.

In order to find out what version your bb messenger is through Option > Applications. Other way is to go Instant Messanging folder from your Home screen – on the contact list screen, press the Menu key and click Options – press the Menu key and select About Blackberry Messenger. You can also just install a ‘new’ version and it will tell you if your version is older or newer.
